Чистый нос. To keep one's nose clean (держать свой нос чистым) значит избегать хлопот, неприятностей. Эта фраза использовалась в начале XX в. в британских военных кругах и означала совет воздерживаться от выпивки, намекая на пену от пива, которая может иногда оказаться в носу слишком рьяного выпивохи. Так как большинство проблем, возникающих в обществе, было вызвано злоупотреблением алкоголем, то «держать свой нос в чистоте» значило быть трезвым и избегать пьяных скандалов.
